Sign of the times

Sign of the times

The birds sing their morning song, the trees are in bud and the road marking equipment is rolled out on weary winter roads.

- It has been a very hard winter, and we had made plans for an earlier start, says Jesper Wraae-Bess. The CEO of Eurostar Denmark concludes that the large amounts of snow have had an impact on both the start of the season and the scope of work to be done.

- Just as the snow began to melt in mid-March, we started with the surveying and registration on the Danish roads. We are not 100% finished with this work, but are rolling out the jobs as soon as the work orders are completed.

The harsh winter has really mistreated the Danish roads. In addition, the cost of snow clearance has challenged the budgets in a number of municipalities. - There are large variations, but we experience that the demand for road marking is lower in some regions, says Jesper Wraae-Bess

- In the Danish Road Directorate the situation is different. Additional funding was given in connection with the financial crisis, so they have started the season with full force to secure employment in operation of the Danish roads. The work follows the scheduled plan, without significant delays, says Jesper Wraae-Bess.

The extent of the work is impressive, and 1 200 tons of thermoplastics will be laid during the season. There are currently around 32 employees in Eurostar Denmark, which operates 14 LCVs, 11 trucks and 12 thermoplastic and milling machines.

What’s the scope of 1 200 tons of thermoplastics? Converted it will give 1.2 million meters of line (width 30 cm), so the Danish teams have a big job ahead.

In Norway we look towards a normal start of the season, although we also have had large amounts of snow this winter. Last week Eurostar hosted a kick-off for their 39 employees at Mastemyr, where the plans for the season was presented. They look towards laying 3 500 tons of thermoplastics in the course of the season.

- 8 workers will start laying lines by hand on Monday 19 April, and otherwise we will have to follow the maintenance and cleaning plans from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration. We are well on track and look forward to the start, says CEO Morten Andersen.
